We create authentic homes that balance historical integrity with contemporary lifestyle

We believe in the English House. The beauty of vernacular farmhouses, Jacobean manors, and Georgian formality.

The evolution of the English house is such fertile ground for inspiration. If you feel the same, our conversation will begin by admiring the beautiful buildings left to us by previous generations.

The conversation then turns to the present. How can your project draw on the qualities of these houses and at the same time work for you? And so we begin a new chapter in the evolution of the English House, written as a collaboration between us.

The studio is led by Tom, who oversees every project. When he set up the practice in 2016, it felt natural for him to return to his Sussex roots and the buildings he loves.

'As a child I enjoyed looking at the vernacular buildings around Sussex. On the drive up to London I would shout 'Lutyens!' as we went past the beautiful Tigbourne Court. Some of my earliest memories are visiting Arundel Castle and admiring the beautifully restored timber framed houses at The Weald and Downland Museum. These buildings got under my skin and they have never left.'

  • Tom Turner

    Director

Tom grew up in the West Sussex countryside, where he developed an early fascination with the vernacular buildings that had evolved in the landscape around him. After graduating top of his year, he worked for several of the country's leading firms, winning numerous awards along the way — including the AIA's award for UK Building of the Year.

His work is contextual and character-led. Every project begins with the place, the client, and the quiet logic of what already exists.

‘The common thread through every project is an appreciation of the past combined with an understanding of how we live now. The result is a home that is natural to its environment and loved by you.’
