DOWNLAND HOUSE
Sensitive restoration and extension of a historic South Downs home
This project involves the thoughtful remodelling and extension of Downland House, a historic home located on the edge of the South Downs in Bepton, West Sussex.
The design carefully enhances the character of the original building while resolving previous unsympathetic alterations. The proposals include the reconfiguration and enlargement of the main house and annexe, alongside the replacement of an outdated garage with a new two-bay structure featuring garden storage and an attic.
The design draws inspiration from the Arts & Crafts tradition, aiming to unify the evolving architectural styles through a consistent vernacular material palette of stone, clay tile, and timber.
A new single-storey orangery and kitchen extension sits harmoniously between the main house and annexe, improving natural light, circulation, and connectivity. Landscape enhancements include a reconfigured driveway and parking forecourt, creating a more legible and ordered approach to the property.
Our design maintains the integrity of this locally distinctive home while significantly improving its functionality, sustainability, and relationship to its surroundings.
The result is a calm and coherent composition that respects the site’s layered history and rural setting.
